The senior building is being named in honor of the Harris family, whose contributions to Serving Seniors began with the late Howard and Iris Harris. Family members regularly volunteer and serve meals at the Gary and Mary West Senior Wellness Center, including niece Cori Harris, who would accompany her grandparents as a young girl.
Financing for the Harris Family Senior Residence and Mid-City Family Apartments was provided by the San Diego Housing Commission, Citi Community Capital, US Bank, County of San Diego Department of Housing and Community Development, California Tax Credit Allocation Committee, and the California Debt Limit Allocation Committee. The land was donated, and additional funding support was provided by Price Philanthropies.
“Access to stable, quality affordable housing is an essential component of Price Philanthropies’ mission to improve life opportunities for underserved youth and families, and their communities. This intergenerational affordable housing development is the achievement of a collective vision to improve the quality of life in City Heights, and along El Cajon Boulevard in particular,” said Robert E. Price, President of Price Philanthropies Foundation.
The engagement of more than one architect for different portions of the project served to enrich the urban scale as intended.
